Community Nursing Unit, Ballyshannon
Community Nursing Unit Ballyshannon
Client HSE Northwest
Description This project forms part of the on-going investment programme of the HSE to provide care facilities for the increasing ageing population and replaces outdated accommodation in the Rock Nursing Home and Sheil Hospital in Ballyshannon. Located on the steply sloping Sheil Hospital site overlooking the river Erne, the project provides a new 80 bed Community Nursing Unit in extensions to the old Sheil Hospital consisting of four Long Stay wards, one Short Stay ward and one Dementia ward. The design is based on the Teaghlach Model which centres on supporting the individual within a homely environment. Tangram Architects are working alongside Rhatigan Architects.
Innovations & Added Value The design folows the steeply sloping site to provide a series of stepped floor plates providing extensive terraces at each level and an individuality to each ward space. The existing Sheil Hospital is converted to provide support areas for the wards including Administration, Central Kitchen and Day Hospital. As the existing building will be occupied, the design permits the construction to be phased to allow the completion of one wing and the decanting of residents from the existing building.
