Prayer Rooms, Great Ormond Street Hospital
Client
Great Ormond Street Hospital
Description
This project involves the conversion of an existing ward at Great Ormond Street Hospital to create a Muslim prayer suite. The existing space is opened up to provide adaptable prayer areas, divided by curtains and bespoke shoe rack joinery. Finishes within the prayer space have been carefully developed with Muslim leaders and the Hospital Imam team, to be modest and natural in feel, flower patterned window film creates a soft light within the space.
A mihrab with tiled niche provides a focus for the space and this, together with the textured prayer carpet is aligned to Kaaba with the assistance of the Hospital Imams who visited the site during the works. Other rooms are converted to provide spaces for ablutions and Tangram Architects designed bespoke tile faced multi-bay units for this ritual purification. A quiet and calm reflection room was also formed to provide families with an area for contemplation.
